Every server starts in my house, where I hand select hard drives, processors and memory sticks. I actually put alternate hard drives in them, load an OS and let my kids play on them. Yes your servers were tested by a 7 and 3 year old. Trust me if they are going to crash, the kids will crash them. If they pass the rigorous tests then I put the real hard drives in them, load the OS, set them up for the IP I am going to use at the datacenter.

Then I take a trip east about a half hour to a room that looks exactly like the one in the second picture, and place the server on rails in the Data 1 rack. The Data 1 rack is the best looking rack in the place, with wire mesh doors on the front and the back. So far we only inhabit one rack, I plan on putting 24 servers in before buying another rack. Even though they are 42U racks, you need room for UPS's, APC strips, switches (like large multi port hubs) and backup equipment.

Here is a picture of the top of the rack the day I put it in, with the switch and power supply for the switch installed only.

Duct tape, sheet rock screws, and Liquid Nails are the only things holding Western civilization together these days ...
