We have noticed over the last few days that our site has been slow to load.  This seems to be intermittent as opposed to constant.  I find the same thing getting into this site and another Ultra site.   I thought it might be my ISP but other site load quickly and I checked this out with another admin and she has the same problem.

We have had a serious increase in network traffic due to a client on a recently installed dedicated server.

Might end up having to increase the "pipe" size, I'm keeping a close eye on it hoping to come up with a less expensive solution. It should be intermittent and usually when someone feels they have to download a huge backup or upload a video to their site. With hundreds of clients now it is hard telling what they all do but I see spikes beyond what the current connection is and have simply asked a few questions and found some that have installed their own tools for backing up their sites and databases. Some of them are uploading large backups to cloud servers elsewhere.

I have been real lenient on bandwidth usage and have been letting some get away with murder, and now it will cost me big time. I might have no choice but to raise renewal fees because I do not drive a Mercedes yet and don't want to have to sell my '99 honda with 225,000 miles on it just so others can have a fast site.

Thanks for the reply Jim.

I have been real lenient on bandwidth usage and have been letting some get away with murder,
Perhaps it is time to get very strict on bandwidth usage, in fairness to other users.

Many users with a successful web site will have no real way to reduce their bandwidth. The only solution is to pay up and buy a package with more allocation. Which doesn't solve the problem of the Data 1 pipe being too small to cope.

Furthermore, if Data 1 is an expanding business, any reduction which existing customers make will soon be overtaken by new users' consumption. If the pipe is congested now, it can only get worse.

Jim, I think you should go for the larger pipe and increase fees accordingly based on actual consumption.

I want a quality hosting service, and for that I expect to pay a fee which properly covers the infrastructure costs and gives Data 1 a proper return. I don't want an el cheapo service which sometimes takes several minutes to deliver a page -- which is what has been happening on my site recently.

Perhaps this topic should be moved to the licensed members area?

Martin.

It is hosting related and not software related, at most I would move it to the hosting section. I firmly believe that facing negativity head on with truth is the best way to handle situations. I couldn't determine individual network traffic till I installed the new switch, now I know which server is using what and now are examining who is pulling what on the individual servers. Something will be done but I'm afraid not this month, probably next.

I suppose this had to come, more people signing up for hosting means more activity and usage at any one time. So the need for a wider pipe had to come sooner or later. Speaking for myself, I wouldnt mind paying a bit more for extra speed, otherwise the advantages of moving to a dedicated server will be whittled down somewhat.

Something else comes to mind here. I believe the majority of forum traffic is bots hitting the servers. Good bots like Google, Yahoo etc. But many bad bots visit too. MSN/Bing is particularly aggressive in hitting my server several times a minute. That is totally unnecessary strain on my server especially when Google only visit a few times each day, and I have contacted MSN about this a few times.
I check the logs every day and there are all kinds of site scrapers, content poachers, email harvesters etc eating up my bandwidth and probably slowing things down.
Of that (for instance) 225 guests online now you will probably find that 50% are bots. I block most of them in htaccess. We all should be doing this as we owe it to ourselves at least to trim the leeches down as much as possible.
Ive managed to reduce the guest numbers in who's online by a great deal. I know it's probably nice too see hundreds of guests online, but we have to face reality and block the parasites. If we all do a little bit, we will all see the benefit.

I didn't come here for what it cost. I came for the excellent service and reliability. If the cost has to go up to maintain that service and reliability then so be it.

Is this my site causing this problem Jim? I recently moved to the dedicated hosting server? We are busy, but I can't imagine busy enough to be causing this type of issue.

The issue has been slowly building over the last 6 months. My switch GUI had failed that's why I had not noticed it. I replaced the switch and can now monitor the exact traffic.

Its kind of like a funnel, all the servers are going through the big side of the funnel to get to the internet. When the funnel fills to the top then it has to wait for some to come out the other side before any more can pass through.

I had not planned this and it is more because of the WowBB users acquisition than our natural user base.

Hi Jim,

If it would help, I would be happy to have my site temporarily moved to a leased server on cera.net's own hosting. Or even on a different data centre if equally reliable. Provided the move is transparent and I still have a cPanel and email.

My bandwidth alone is unlikely to make much difference, but if others on shared hosting were willing to do the same it may make enough difference to get you over this sticky patch.

regards,

Martin.

Mine too James. I think Jim is right, this started happening around the time of all the WOW sites migrating here. I hope Jim can fix this before a migration from here starts.

Understood and agreed.
I just want my members to be able to post. Sunday's are typically busy days and the natives are restless, hahaha.
