Hi Jim.  This nasty problem seems to be back.  Just heard from someone who is a member of several UltraBoards.  After trying to log-in to one of our Password protected pages (not a part of our board but hosted on the same site) she was unable to get on to her other boards.  One of them she is a moderator on.  She is quitting us because of this problem.  I hate to see anyone give up and suspect there is a soultion we aren't seeing.  Her boards manager has apparently contacted you and gotten her reset so that she can get back on her board.  But it seems like this nasty problem just doesn't want to give up.

I am curious about the password causing the problem.  Is this because we also host the rest of our site with you?  If we hosted somewhere else would the problem go away.  We did not have a problem until after the server change.

At present our board is closed for the holidays.  All active members were moved to a group called On Break.  That limits what they can see and do and allows the mods to not have to check their forums.

Looks like I'll have to disable the firewall. It's simple, someone tries to log in wrong 5 times in 5 minutes and it shuts them down.

I'll take the http protected directory rule out but only since I know about everyone on that server. Sorry you are having problems but I'm just trying to protect you, repeated attempts to log in to protected areas are a sign of an attack. But not in this case... it's just people with consecutive bad guesses.

Jim just called and said the internet went down at his work when he tried to disable the firewall. He will have to do this when he gets home in a little bit.

Sorry for that.

OK I dropped all the current blocks and moved the 5 number to 20. If they attempt to log in to anything 20 times in 5 minutes unsuccessfully without checking or resetting a password they should probably leave anyway.

Please let us know if it is working now. I will check the IP tables frequently.

The problem arose because the password your member was given had been changed and she wasn't told of the change. Obviously when she tried to use the p/w she had been given, it triggered the safely measures Jim had in place because she tried several times.   Now that Jim has changed the amount of tries, that should cure your problem as I can't see people trying to login that many times.

We have never had these problems on our forum, but then again we don't have everything password protected.

I do understand where you are cominig from.  The person involved had been told the page she wanted to access would be unavailable until midnight GMT on Jan 5th.  But she tried it anyway.  Normally we only change passwords during our twice a year breaks.  It would not do us any good to take the break if they were still expecting us to help them work through a tutorial while we are away.  But some people are just very persistant when they think they are right or have the right to do something.
