I have a private site/forum I don't want anybody to see, at least not for a few months. With my other forum, I always seem to have to briefly let everybody see new forums as I'm creating them within the categories and setting the user permissions. I don't know how to keep it from doing that (other than turning off the whole forum -- if that works). Also I'd like all members to be hidden. I want everybody to default to browsing anonymously, the members hidden from everybody including each other, and no record of who has been online or who the latest member is. How do I do this? Thanks. Last edited on Thu Feb 18th, 2010 07:13 am by snooze |

Hi Snooze, Yes, turning your board off will prevent unregistered, registered, banned and moderators from logging in and seeing your forums before youve had a chance to set the permissions for them. Admins and super mods will still be able to log in if the board is turned off. When you set your permissions, uncheck the box that says "view who's online" for each group and it takes away the who's online box at the bottom. Since who visited follows the same permissions for who's online, it will also take away that box when you uncheck "view who's online" Defaulting everyone to browse invisible requires some code change that Jim can do for you. Please excuse my curiosity but when I read this : "Also I'd like all members to be hidden. I want everybody to default to browsing anonymously, the members hidden from everybody including each other, and no record of who has been online or who the latest member is." I couldn't help but think how is anyone going to know who is doing what? Members won't know if anyone is there to pass comment to unless it's a forum whose subject is one which doesn't need interaction between members. Just my curiosity snooze.

Thanks Di. Is it also possible for Jim to 'clear my server' (whatever that means) to limit any search engine data already collected during the period of time I didn't realize unregistered members could see it? And Robert, the members just need interaction with me.

I'm sorry there is no way to purge crawled data that I am aware of. You don't even want online status in posts? Need to know before I go butchering the code.

I don't think its purging data, but I was told there's something in the C-Panel that will help. Dunno. If the browsing status is hidden, the online status won't automatically show up in profiles from my experience, right? Is that what you mean?

Then it would show offline which is a status. I'm talking removing it altogether. ALSO in the friends panel it tells the online status for people you select as friends. Do you want this gone too. In the cpanel hmmmm.... You can construct a robots.txt file but only the good guys actually follow the rules in there. I checked google and bing, neither had crawled your board in an open state. You had the trial in an open state also. Trial boards do get crawled.
