Hi all,

I've been a moderator and long-time user of internet message boards, but never set one up on my own. Forgive me for being so "end user" here with my questions.

I am in need of finding and creating a low-cost message board that allows privacy AND the ability to upload files to share. I do NOT want guests to be able to view the site in any fashion, nor do I want it to be indexed by Google bots.

The only eyeballs I want on the site are mine and whomever I give user permissions. :)

Secondly, I would like to set up threads/topics/forums that can only be seen by certain users and NOT by all users.  The users will NOT be moderators, if that matters.

I just want certain people to log in, go to a visible forum (which would differ from person to person) and be able to view/upload/download shared files and documents. The threads will allow collaboration and discussion of those documents.

I don't want pop ups/ads/etc. if I can help it. I know you get what you pay for, but I don't want to toss a bunch of money out the window either.

I've thought about Google Docs. Not what I wanted.
I've tried ScribD. Not very secure (can see file folders on profile even for private documents).
I've got a MSOffice Live account and I don't like it.

I need a message board, really! LOL

Help?  Let me know if UltraBB is a good fit based on that criteria.  I can't seem to find some of the answers so all help is appreciated.

Hi Auntie,

The permission system on UltraBB can do all that.... and more. At least one of our members (§issie) runs a totally private board. Best thing to do is start a trial board here:http://ultratrial.com/trial.php and try to set it up. If you have problems a number of people here can be of great help.

Welcome to Ultra!

Welcome to Ultra!

You know, I was lurking around and hearing all the great stuff about how responsive you guys are....  And...here you are being responsive on this thread too.  LOL  Thank you!

It looks like I will be signing up.

Seriously, I have been pulling my hair out trying to find a solution.  Thanks for providing it during non-business hours.  :)

Some more questions, I suppose...just to make sure I have this correctly...

If I sign up for the trial, will I need to contact the hosting company or is that entire process built in when signing up?  I want to be up and running TONIGHT, if at all possible.

Secondly, by doing the trial, will it give a "temporary" web address to access the board, only to change later?  I'd rather be consistent and just have one web address.  How would that work?

Thanks Jim.  You've are my hero for the day.

Hi,

Jim is the hosting company (Data 1 Systems). For the trial it's all-in-one sign-up.

Martin.

I am setting it up now, but want to make sure it's not viewable by others. Do I have to manually shut off the indexing or guest access? If so, what panel is that found?

I'm sorry for being a red-headed step child. LOL I am just not seeing it yet. Thanks!

Best thing to do is to close the board (then it will be viewable to only you), set up the categories/forums as you want, then set permissions before opening back up.

Go to admin panel on the left will be a board on/off link. On that page you can turn the board off. If you want to test it log out then, you will see the off message. You can log back in because you are admin and do some work :) .

Okayyy....one more question. :squint:

One of the other elements I wanted to integrate on the board was to have all outgoing links "anonymized". I have the html code to do it, is there a way to add this to the site by any chance?

I know this sounds so...secretive...Let's just say I am trying to keep some cyberstalkers from finding me so I can share my stuff in peace.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Auntie Mame,

It sounds like you've had your questions answered, but let me just give you my two cents, for what it's worth. My forum was created after a bitter split with another forum. We didn't want guests or other people to track us down. It's been almost five years now, and we've never had our site viewed or visited by anyone other than registered users. And it really was very simple to set up. We don't show up in search engines, either.

Best of luck.

Copper...thanks so much for sharing your experience. This is exactly what I wanted to hear, really. I am really rattled with the current cyberstalking issue and had to be sure I wasn't opening myself up for more problems. You can't be too careful these days. I've learned that the hard way, unfortunately.

Sorry you had the problems in the past...I know it's not fun.

Again, thanks for the help and feedback everyone. I am so tickled to have this board available!

Hi Auntie Mame

Im §issie and im the one with a very private board...
My board deals with a very touchy situation ' Step Parenting'
We all need some where to go for help and to blow off steam to save our marriages ;)

My board is locked down as tight as can be for the internet... I have never had a problem with anyone being able to get in unless they are invited to The Brighter Side....

We all know that there are hackers out there but ive never had a problem so I consider my site to be very private and safe... The only way a new member gets in is through me...:)

Here check us out....You can see  how private we are...;)

TheBrighterSide.org

If i can help you or answer any questions just let me know.... Im not around to much right now do to a family reunion this weekend and my husbands children are her for visitation for the summer.. i will be freed up after August 14th...

and if you do decide to go with UltraBB you will not be sorry !!!:)

Hi everyone! Thanks for the wonderful welcome. I am working on just a couple hours of sleep so I will reply in a proper fashion later. Thank you again!

Either I am sleep deprived or I am missing how to block guests from seeing the board. Is there a "how-to" somewhere on tweaking the user permissions?

I'll try working on it more tomorrow. It's sleep time, thank GOODNESS!

admin panel >> users >> click on the row Unactivated (should be the top one) the click permissions button and untick all the boxes

Its easy to forget, but if you think of it like this "Everyone is a User" and that includes the people that have not registered.

Hi again! Happy Friday! :)

I am really loving the board, y'all. Love it! I put in a lot of work figuring it all out, but still have a question.

After unclicking the permissions for guests (thanks again!), I logged out as the admin, then went back to the sign-in screen to register as if I was some random visitor and used a different log-in name than the one I used for admin.

It allowed me to register and said to wait for the activation email.

Then I got the email sent to my admin email address letting me know I had a "new user". The email simply said:

Subject: New user registration on {board name}

Username: Auntie Mame

I was thinking I had to approve the registration, but NOOOO! The activation email went right to my guest registration email and was activated through there.

I know I am missing something, right? Isn't there a way to prevent someone from registering without my approval?

PS>  Would I change the activation email to "OFF"?

Bless you for being so patient. :)

Hi AM,

You can't prevent someone registering (well you can, but then membership would be by your invitation only), but you can prevent them then seeing your forum.

What you do is to create a new user group called "Full Member" or whatever. You give them full rights to view your forum.

Then for the "Registered" group you remove as many rights as you wish.

After someone registers, if you approve them you move them to the Full Member group. Or you don't.

Don't forget to move all your existing members to the new Full Member group.

regards,

Martin.
