Simon wrote:I am using IE and browse the internet with no problems. If it was just a swipe at IE then fair enough, but if IE is different, I wouldn't mind knowing how and why ?
Hi Simon,

Many commercial web sites in effect have two versions of their site, one for IE, and one for all other browsers. Generally the IE version has to have some features disabled or implemented differently in order to get it to work.

This often drives web developers nuts -- their workload would be halved without having to cater for IE. Recently in the UK it took a firm the size of Tesco (the largest retailer in the UK) 4 days to get its banking website to work on IE.

Their customers were up in arms, but could have solved their problem in about 30 seconds flat by downloading Firefox or Opera or Google Chrome or Safari or almost any other browser.

regards,

Martin.

I really don't want to be a pain in the arse and am not siding with any of them, but you say IE doesn't conform to standards! Wasn't IE available a long time before the others, doesn't it mean that they are the ones that are not conforming, who sets this standard anyway?

No pain it's OK.

David was wrong on the pricing page, the new client area is here: https://data1systems.com/client_area/

Click on "order" then you can browse the links at the top of that page to discover pricing. We offer custom packages also, if you have any specific questions I will be in and out all night :)

I originally didn't like IE because it was too "forgiving" of bad coding practices.... tags not closed properly... poor syntax in CSS. Makes programmers lazy if they just program for IE.

They seem to intentionally cut new paths to see who will follow, the usage stats speak for themselves. I know that the old Netscape had tabs, firefox had tabs THEN IE said "oh, that is getting popular, we better do that".

It is easy to dislike the "big guys", seems human nature to oppose power. From a coding perspective they still have enough market share that we better program to make it look good in IE even if it takes 2 versions of most JS routines. Which it certainly does, that's a fact.

Thanks for that. I have downloaded FF and is it me or does the resolution seem better, it certainly seems sharper.

One question - can I put my favourite links across the top as in IE9 ?, that is so convenient.

Thanks for the link, I was an old WoW customer and now retired I have the time to look after a board, something you can't do when it gets popular and your have the inconvenience of going to work as well :)

I'll pick the answer in the morning if you don't mind.

Hi Simon,

IE was not the first, in fact Microsoft were quite late to join the party. Earlier browsers included Mosaic and Netscape Navigator, which were not free.

Microsoft killed them off by giving IE away free with Windows.

The web standards are set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which was founded in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee (the inventor of the web) -- http://www.w3.org/

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wide_Web_Consortium

regards,

Martin.

Well I will give FF a go, but I can say in all honesty, I've been using it since Windows 98 and through all the versions and have never ever had a problem with it.

It's not working Jim.
Whatever I put in, alphabet only, I get:

The board name you entered contains characters that are not allowed.
Please click the back button and enter another board name.

the answer is yes, but then you again, you may have already figured that out :)

I was an avid IE user. In fact, you might see old posts here where I wouldnt even think about using any other browser but IE. I have to admit, I have been converted to FF. Now if Jim can convince me to give up windows and use Linux........
