As some of you know already, Data 1 has implemented a new system for billing and invoicing. This module also has download and support ticket features, needed for tracking accounts and better organizing multiple products and services owned by clients.

This topic will be closed to posting, any concerns or questions should be addressed in newly started threads. The resolutions and answers will be posted in this topic AND added to the knowledge base in the new support system.

First of all, before I post the link...

1. Not all clients have been imported yet. We are working daily on this.
2. Clients that have been imported have a random password set by the import routine. It will be necessary for you to have a password sent to you, to do this you must have the e-mail address you used during sign up. If you don't remember, don't have or cannot access the original e-mail contact Di or myself via e-mail and we can change the account e-mail.
3. Clients that have been imported... all your products may not be in your details yet. Mostly UltraBB licenses and free domain names. We are working on this also.

The new system is very automated. It will create web accounts upon signup, create domain names, allow you to manage nameservers on domain names ordered after today. The current domains will be listed as "legacy domains" but if you need complete control then put in a support ticket and we can convert the legacy domains upon renewal date.

There are way too many new features to list in one post. Subsequent posts will be added to the "knowledge base" in the new system and will serve as tutorials.

The original Data 1 support site will be read only as of the day all clients are imported. It will remain on line as read only till summer then will be deleted completely.

There will be a hosting only public support forum available soon, about the same time the private support is closed for posting.

All products including UltraBB licenses will need to go through the new system soon. This board will remain open but only as a UltraBB public support site, all hosting related issues will have to be directed to the new client area.

Please start threads with related questions here and we will attempt to make the migration as painless as possible.

Most clients have been entered, and with the exception of a few minor tweaks (and the addition of the new front page soon) the client area is ready.

Data 1 Client Area


As we go through the numbers and stats from the past couple years, we noticed a few real bad areas for ourself, and will have to make some adjustments to policies and plans.

PLEASE READ THIS NEXT LINE


If you are a current customer there will be no changes to your current plan or pricing, unless it is an obvious upgrade.

Changes to Hosting Plans


As of this date (Jan 30th 2011) the new plans will take effect.
One of the major changes being made is we can no longer offer free domain names for Monthly plans.

When we as a company register a domain name it requires AT LEAST a 1 year commitment, and in the case of some domain names we now offer (specifically .co.uk) it requires a 2 year commitment. This has proven often to be a source of lost revenue, especially when dealing with hundreds of domain names. If we want to grow and improve the current level of service we have to be in tune with these things.

We have officially added the ability to host multiple domains on intermediate and professional plans. This has been an unwritten rule for a couple years now, we are making it public and official. If you have multiple current smaller plans and think you would benefit from this change start a support ticket in the new client area and we will review your specific case.

Changes to Dedicated Server Plans

If you have a dedicated server, you already know the benefits of having Data 1 as your host. In order to keep the prices as they are and service level where it is we have already made changes all current dedicated server customers know about. For new or prospective customers the plans will change slightly.

All dedicated servers will have to be quoted on a per situation basis until we can keep more equipment in stock. Dedicated server customers have specific needs, and setups can vary significantly according to end results needed. We can configure just about anything you need. A quote form should appear within the week at the new client area.

Close definitions to managed, unmanaged, and resources will be included in these definitions.

The Good Parts

There are several advantages to the new automated system.

  1. Hosting accounts will be created instantly upon successful payment received
  2. The support ticket system will take priority and has different methods of contacting us. Problems will get solved even quicker than they already do.
  3. Domains that are registered through the new system will have a control area where you can set nameservers, request transfer codes and change whois info.
  4. On accounts with multiple domains, you can buy just a domain name and instantly go to your C-Panel and create the addon domain. No more waiting.
  5. UltraBB licenses have been moved to the new area also. Buying a license will give you instant access to the files, no waiting any more. Same with the Arcade as an addon, when you pay you have access to the files immediately. Unfortunately until I can write an install script leased boards will still have to be installed by us but the hosting portion will be created immediately. 
  6. You can go to the client area and check server status of all our servers, instantly telling if it is "up" or "down" and what the load was as of browser refresh. Traditionally a load of up to 1 per processor core is considered normal, so unless the load passes 4 it is not considered a problem. Server 7 has been known to jump to 10 during database restores, and I don't notice a slowing.
There is plenty of adjusting to do and a whole lot of HTML to write. We have noticed already having more time to take care of things because of the automated back end. Who knows, there may even be more time to do things like update a certain forum software....
