Hi folks,

I purchased a basic hosting package last week and tonight tried to do a manual install of the latest stable version of Wordpress.

I have created a database and user with all privileges and uploaded all the Wordpress files into a folder called wordpress in the root folder.

I have edited wp-config.php with all the relevant details and treble checked them/deleted everything and started over, but when I continue to the installation procedure using wp-admin/install.php I get the message:

Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.
Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?

I suspect the problem may be the one entry I am not certain of which is where I specify the MySQL Hostname.
I am using 'localhost'

Is this correct and is there anything else I should know settings-wise?

I have tried an auto install in cpanel>Software/Services>Site Software>Blogs>Wordpress but get the message:

This is a modified cPanel module. Please contact the maintainer for support. (v0.4)

Website http://www.wordpress.org/

Sorry modified cPanel addons are not allowed, contact your server admin for more info.

I've seen mention of this error elsewhere and was under the impression it was fixed, or was that on another server and this one needs modifying?

Any help would be appreciated.
Low priority and no biggie if it doesn't work. ;)

Hi Steve,

I'll go in and do a manual refresh on all install packages. This usually works as the info can become old real quickly.

Make sure you delete the old install files prior to attempting an install.

I'll alert you when it is refreshed.

BTW localhost is correct.

Try it now. If it doesn't fly I'll try it.

Jim,

Many thanks!

Deleted everything including database and user and all files.

The automatic install via CPanel then worked.

I'm in! :)

Excellent. I've had to rebuild that before, I don't know why it isn't automated.

Let us know if you need anything else-
