Hi Jim,

Seems like I am getting a lot of complaints that our members can't reach our sites.  This is the third week now that more than one member has written about it.  When I try or our moderators try, it all works just fine.

http://Pirc-bw.com

Our pages are password protected, but in all cases the person having the problem has been able to log-in before without trouble.  They are getting the "Page cannot be displayed" error message.

http://pirc-bw.com/forums/

Two previous people could not reach the Board either.

Are these members from any specific region or country or....

Specific members not being able to access usually means local problems with their network or firewalls.

One is in Tennesse that I am sure of.  Many of our members are in other countries.  But I believe all who were reporting a problem were in the US.

With the one we had last week, we tried all of the Firewall, ISP, security settings and had them delete temporary internet files.  But nothing specifically worked that we know of.   I quote below what she said...

Don't know if this message will "fly" - but I haven't been able to access The Beginners' Workshop site since mid-Sunday afternoon. I wanted to start the 2nd lesson in Level 1 but site would not accept my login info AGAIN- 3rd time for this problem and I WAS PUTTING it in correctly - tried several times. Then after sending a "reply" to your prior email on 10/04/09 to ask that you look into why my login id was still not acceptable - I found that I couldn't even access BG Workshop site, nor the VAA site where I'm taking HTML2 lessons. I contacted Verizon FIOS Support and after doing a DOS traceroute function, I was told by Verizon FIOS support that the inability to connect to either site [I am aware that both sites are tied together] was a "server" problem. As of late Monday afternoon, I still could not connect. So I turned off my modem for 24hrs - that reset my IP address, so I can't help but wonder if my IP address - which was static on Sunday since I never turned modem off[didn't know where modem was]- isn't being blocked...for whatever reason...Now today, Tuesday 10/06/09, I can finally access sites but still cannot log into the BG PI Workshop - Level 1 - login id refused. What gives here - sure don't understand what the problem is!!!!Thank you for your attention to this problem

She is in Florida.

It turned out that the login she was using was incorrect.  But that doesn't go for her inability to reach other sites of ours.

My most recent complaint was that the person could not reach the webpage she had just created and uploaded. http://pirc-bw.com/mentees/yvonne/index.html  But I have no trouble getting there myself.

I will try to find out where the other people having trouble are located.

TN here and all works fine. Perhaps try to find out if they have an ISP in common - have heard bad things about FIOS.

My most recent complainer is in Tennesse (very near the southeast corner) and she is on AT&T-Bell South.  She can get a page to open for a minute or two, but when she tries to enter her userid and password it fails and then she can't get the login page back for another whole day.  She says she can't get anything but the Register page on our board.  I can login as her with no trouble at all.

If you can log in as them no problem, and they can't log in then it has to be something with their firewall, security settings on browser, things like that.

I would say 19 out of 20 log in problems end up being the members setup... lately especially with Vista and IE7/8.

The other 1 being an unusual character in their user name.

Well the problem has popped up again with another member.  The one in Tennesse just gave up.  She has no access to the BW board or the PhotoImpact International board.  Just now I got an email from another member who can't access either of these boards.  I have asked her the obvious questions and am waiting for a response.  But it doesn't make any sense to me that she had access to both boards until the weekend, now with no changes made on her Laptop, she can't get back in.

OK I looked and the only thing I see wrong is an awesomely long banned IP list. Banning IP's is always a problem these days. A cable or DSL service always has dynamic IP pools, you might have the same IP for 6 months then loose power for 3 seconds and "shazam" the IP is blocked of someone you like because it was rotated from someone you blocked.

Note to all communities: blocking IP's and e-mails addresses is virtually useless these days... just don't do it. I might not even include IP blocking on the next version because it not only does no good it is almost always counterproductive. You will only block the honest people because the dishonest don't follow the rules.

Delete all the blocked IP's on one site and tell me if they can log in.

Better yet, tell me which site, I'll delete (and save) them, if I'm wrong I'll put them back for you.

Deal?

I just looked and can't see that there are any blocked IP's.  Am I looking in the wrong place?

I went to Advanced / Bans & Filters.

Arrgh might have been me, I was on PII not PIRC. Too many sites that begin with photoimpact LOL.

Ultrabb.net, .com and Data1systems are on the same server as you are. They can verify it is indeed the site and not the server if they come to one of those.

I can assure you the software doesn't start blocking random people. We need more clues.

The person I have been talking to today can get on the PI-I board, but not every time she tries.  When she goes to PIRC-BW she gets the login page and when she tries to log in it goes to Registration and suggests she joins.  I even created her a new log-in, but that didn't work either.  I asked about clearing temp files and cookies.  She says she does that every two or three days.  Is there a way to white list people?

Just when this started happening I PM'd the person involved.  She couldn't log in to get the PM.  This also happened last week with another person.

It isn't blacklisting the members. The problem is on the users end.

There is a way to cure it once but that won't keep them from messing it up again and the cost is logging everyone out. Should we do this?

There I just did it. I reset the cookie domain for everyone.

Everyone will have to log back in.

For anyone reading the software does not blacklist people. It does not make decisions on who gets in and who doesn't unless you tell it to by IP or E-mail ban.

Browsers simply give users too many choices on what to do with cookies and javascript. People usually do not understand that you can delete individual cookies and that you shouldn't be on the site in question when deleting a cookie for that site AND it's a good idea to close the browser down after deleting cookies before visiting or refreshing.

If you are having a problem in IE, get Firefox (and do not import IE settings to it). If you are having a problem in firefox, try the same routine with IE.

Please.
