Hey all....I am a moderator on another forum (powered by Vbulliten)

Anyway we have been getting spammed to death. The admins are working on it, but wow, these spammers are busy!!

One thing I noticed is we have several spiders and one in particular that is busy crawling around and I never seen it before..
\
Anyone familiar with Baidu Spider? Should I block the IP or is it harmless....I googled it, but want some trusted advice

It is a huge problem, it ignores robots.txt in my personal studies, and hit sometimes 4-500 pages at once. Really drags on the server.

They have several hundred IP's, won't do any good to block it in less than a day it will be back.

Well above and beyond the spiders we are getting profiles being generated. I banned and blocked over 100 new registered users today alone.

Baidu is the Chinese competition of Google.... it is more popular there then Google simply because of the local regulations making Google basically useless....

It is the same thing as the Google Spider just for the Chinese search Engine called Baidu.

You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baidu

Baidu is okay, I wouldn't suggest blocking it unless they are hammering your server every minute of the day.

Eric, convince them to use CAPCHA and also to setup User Tracking Match. We catch a LOT of spammers/banned members on the vB board I'm on using that.

They are on there constantly, and in many locations at once. I just wasn't certain if there was a connection between them and the recent spam attacks

If they are not using the Captcha then it is simply "their problem". Not using the available tools is plain and simple silly. Major major fortune 100 companies have captch/recaptcha and similar systems on their site.

If you mean they don't want to use captcha, then it's really not a problem you should have to be coping with. Having captcha and failing to use it seems a daft strategy for defeating spammers.

I have noticed a development here of registering on day one, then disappearing for one or several days and then returning and spamming.

Had one this morning, Rainer, One of the biggest anti spam weapons I know of is to have moderators in different time zones same as here and on Steve's board.

they have been doing that one my forum for a long long time. All actual human spammers, clearly with a target list of sites. They join one day and then come back a few days or even weeks later to try to spam.

You must have mods who are on at all different times or they will kill you right when no one is there to address their spamming mess .....

I stand corrected they are using captcha, but this doesn't stop them. Oddly their profile is very easy to spot. Pretty much just the same word over and over. The majority enter an ICQ number.

The other thing they have been doing is creating albums without any pictures in them. Just words and links etc...

It has slowed down, but I am still getting a couple a day. And many do what TV described...coming back, some even post, and then come back and add a link to their sig as it will then show in their posts.....

One thing people often forget to do is change the "Time Limit" for editing posts.

This lets spammers make "legit" posts and then come back days or weeks later and "Edit" them to add their spam links. Nobody will notice because it is no longer a new post and everyone has "looked" at it by then.
