A precaution I have taken for years now on windows computers is to have the "Preview Pane" disabled in outlook and/or outlook express. This gives you a chance to delete the e-mail before it is actually opened on your system. The default setting for both programs is preview pane on. Viewing in the preview pane is the same as opening the mail.

I use Mailwasher which lets me see emails before downloading to the computer.
