This impresses me. Installed on a laptop, instantly saw everything... sound, vid, wireless, EVERYTHING. The Unity desktop is great, and it lets you revert to classic if you get lost. Has a launcher which hides during anything maximized. It's fast, stable and if it were a pay product sitting beside windows 7 I would buy Ubuntu instead. But it is free. Installation was only a few clicks. I'm having a hard time believing any geek that builds a computer would buy windows just for the one or two things you can do in windows that you can't do in Ubuntu 11.04. I could name off about 20 things you can do in 11.04 that you can't do in windows, not a one of them involve reaching for your wallet or clicking your paypal account. This just plain works. Now if I could just pry my 7 year old off it long enough to use it myself....

Well the secret is putting them ALL on your system so you can choose based on what you need to do. I have Mac OS, Windows 7, XP and Ubuntu all going on the same machine.... as well as Chrome OS Beta. The only problem I find converting to Linux completely is that sometimes the Tutorials you can find for Windows Based Software (Such as Photoshop) do not exist in as plenty as the Linux Alternative.

Are you multi booting or running VM's? Since I don't read lack of tutorials has no bearing LOL.

Well I have multiple systems. On my Mid 2010-Alienware M17x R2.... I boot it via USB Drive or a Live CD. On my Late 2010 17" Macbook Pro.... I use VM. On my Early 2011 11" Macbook Air I am MultiBooting with Hard installs. Each has different purpose... I don't always need a "Native" install..... I need the tutorials for some of the advanced stuff. I learned just about everything I know about Photoshop from reading tutorials or books. There just isn't enough info about "Alternative" software out there for advanced stuff.

So if I have Windows XP on my PC, I can also have Ubuntu 11.04 as well? So how would I select which OS I would use when powering up the PC to start with? Ron

Jim, I don't like Dell.... they bought Alienware which sucks because they are the only way to get a really configurable performance Laptop that is serious. I wanted the better graphics and needed a 2nd hard drive bay in the case.... which limited my options. Sol. Yes you can. Basically it prompts you with a menu when you turn it on asking you which OS you want to boot into.

I still use Ubuntu, but when I could not get Call of Duty to run on it, even under wine, I kinda stuck it on the back burner. I do love the program though.

If you want to get into Ubuntu, you might not want to start with 11.04. it is the latest and just fresh out of Beta.

Also depending on what you intend to do with it, Ubuntu is REALLY bloated.

11.04 is the easiest yet to install and use. On your second post, I have not noticed this at all, what is your evidence on this? I have search indexes rebuilding in root profile, 3 other profiles all logged in to and I don't notice any slow down even on the 2G of ram machine. You really notice a difference in speed on a windows machine with anyone else logged in.

I am just saying since it is Fresh out of Beta, and a change in interface... may want to give it a few weeks for the "masses" to get the bugs out (if there are any). In terms of "Bloated" I am referring to disk space usage compared to other distro's of Linux. Ubuntu is packed with features, and if you are simply looking to for example get around Windows File Security.... you could use a smaller distro like Damn Small Linux which will boot faster and be a smaller foot print on your hard drive and give you the essentials.

The stock interface is a change, but at the login screen you can select from the bottom bar "ubuntu classic" and it looks identical to 10.04 or 10.10. I personally weathered the Unity desktop till I understood it... took about 2 days but it is sweet IMO.

I ran this a few times from disk and installed it today, but when I reboot I can't find it. All went ok installing it beside xp pro. Any ideals where to find it would help. I looked on their forums and all the stuff related flew over my head.

Installing Ubuntu dual booting with XP is a challenge. Did you follow a tutorial? or did you just put the disk in and run it? I am sorry to ask questions, and not give answers... but without knowing your plan or skill level my answers can be very dangerous.

those instructions are for installing it stand alone on a system, not in conjunction with another operating system. Having 2 operating systems on your Machine is a bit more complicated.... and not for everyone.
