If I right click on a shortcut to a program and then choose Security I can see that I have Full Control ticked but in fact this doesn't appear to be much of a control at all as there many places where I am told I don't have permission to carry out this or that task. Looking down the list I can see at the bottom 'Special Permissions' which remains blank and I haven't been able to get at it no matter what I do. Does anyone know anything about this? This wasn't a problem on XP but it started with Vista and has carried on to Windows 7.

Hi Bob,

Right-click on the shortcut.

Click Properties.

Click the Shortcut tab.

Click the Advanced button.

Tick the box for "Run as Administrator".

Click OK.

regards,

Martin.

Hello Martin,

thanks for that but I have already tried it and it works fine on all the shortcuts except the one I want it to. You will probably have guessed that it's iTunes again. If you right click on the application itself you get a different setup of course.

Any other ideas?

Bob

Hi Bob,

My previous suggestion still applies:

1. Take the iTunes thingy back to where you purchased it.

2. Bang on the counter.

3. Demand to be shown how to make it work as advertised, else you demand your money back.

:)

Martin.

Hi again,

it's not the Apple iPod Touch that's at fault Martin, that works perfectly, it's the iTunes installation that's at fault and that's a downloadable freebie.
Fortunately I had a tip from a group of others on the internet with the same problem. I have installed a virtual drive on one of my discs and installed Windows XP on it and iTunes loads into that straight away without trouble. This is no good as a permanent fix as it swallows up memory and slows everything down. I wish I could think of a way to move the installed iTunes on to my C: drive as a working unit.

Hi Bob,

These hand-held gadgets are all a mystery to me. :)

However, the web seems to be awash with alternatives to iTunes.

See for example: http://www.mediamonkey.com

which has free and paid-for versions.

You can make it work without iTunes apparently (this is from the Media Monkey site):

iTunes comes with the device driver for iPhone/iPod Touch that is required by many third-party media players to detect and access the database of the iPhone. As soon as you install iTunes, you will be able to use Media Monkey to sync your music.
For those who don’t want to install iTunes, there is a hack:

1. Download the iTunesSetup.exe file

2. Rename the .exe to .msi

3. Get 7-Zip to extract only what you need from the iTunes installer archive.

4. Open up the zipped file (right click 7-zip -> Open Archive, open .rsrc directory) and extract AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi for 64-bit) and QuickTime.msi (Quicktime lite recommended instead)

(4.1 iTunes v9.1 - In the .rsrc directory, opend the RCDATA directory and extract the CABINET file. Rename it to amds.cab, open that file again with 7Zip, and then extract the .msi files as above.)

5. Install these two files.

You can then sync your iPhone with Media Monkey without iTunes.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Yes Mediamonkey does what it says on the label, syncs music without iTunes. The problem is that the iPod is so much more than a music player. iTunes has thousands of applications for it from games to serious business and wi-fi applications. For example I can keep an eye on the forum while out shopping or read the worlds press if I'm waiting for something, a bus or train or wife. I can even access the iTunes store from my iPod Touch and buy stuff for it if I want. In fact I have almost but not quite reached the point where I can actually do without iTunes on my computer. Oh happy day that will be if and when it arrives.
What gets to me is the fact that thousands of people have downloaded iTunes into their Windows 7 without any problems at all while thousands of others are stuck like me. I also hate the thought of being beaten by some lousy bit of software.

You are right Robert. I just right-clicked my i-tunes shortcut and no option to run as admin.

That's another strange one then because I have the Run as Admin on my right click but it makes no difference because I seem to need those Special Permissions, which I can't get. Apple can make life very difficult at times.
