Hi Eric,

Choose a product name which is an invented word and not in the dictionary.

e.g. Try entering UltraBB in Google. :)

Martin.

Entering 'spadoctor-va' into Google will always get your man at the top of the list because he is the only one using that name but if he wants people to enter just 'hot tub' or 'spa' and for the search to bring his company to the top of the page then that's a different matter.

Your man can have a sponsored link, on Google for example, and his advert will always come up on the right hand side of the page when people enter Spa or hot tub.

Thanks!
How about ways to have his site come out in the first in the group of search results?

If there was a simple answer there would be no SEO companies.

The greatest value is incoming links on other sites with a high PR. There is a link to UltraBB on the bottom of every UltraBB board, I believe I have a PR of 4. The only way to get "at the top" is a strategic array of search engine optimization combined with link distribution to sites with high traffic. There are no guarantees and it can cost a fortune.

Hot tubs might be easier than if you were selling "vegetables" or "Oil" because it is less common.

I take a slightly different approach to this issue based on 10 plus years of trying to push websites (mine and clients) to the top of search engines.  While no argument on quality inbound links, I believe the domain name and the titles of subordinate pages within the site are critical to getting indexed on the engines, google in particular.

I looked at your clients site.  It is a one page web site, whose title indicates this is a fairly narrow geographic and functional focus area.  It has very little content.  So the approach I would take is to add content by adding pages that have titles that match the search terms your client is interested in.  You'll need to do some homework on search terms asnd then build pages and content to support them.  Keywords are nice for some engines but Google ignores them completely so don't beat your brains out on those.

So think about adding something like this

http://www.spadoctor-va.com/spatroubleshooting.html and then do a general trouble shooting page if that is what is being searched for. the key is to create that page and content based on a critical high volume search term.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about.  We operate a site called sancarlosmexico.com.  The most popular search term for san carlos mexico is san carlos mexico.  So where are we ranked?  #1 on google, yahoo, bing and the rest that matter.  The power of a properly structured and targeted domain name cannot be ignored.  Not to mention over 60 pages of content, advertising and oh, yea a very popular message forum powered by ultrabb.com

Hope this helps

Bart

We spend HUNDREDS of dollars a month with one of the best known SEO/Web design companies on the East Coast. They do a great job, but it is expensive and we still do additional work ongoing to keep us at the top (endless blogging, site updating, new content, Facebooking, Twitter, traditional link exchanges, etc etc etc)

It is an all consuming, never ending, time sucking, battle with the gods at Google and their maddening ever changing formula to get ranked high.

It is not easy and anyone who tells you different is flat out lying.

Hi TVD,

I have never done anything at all to promote my site on the search engines. But if you enter

track design software

in Google, my site is currently showing as the 2nd result here in the UK (out of what Google claims to be about 19 million results!).

I think Google can detect sites which are trying to force their way up the lists. :)

When I use Google I want to see the most relevant results, not sites which have paid to be there.

regards,

Martin.
