Hey Jim,

Is it possible to use Data1 hosting as a game server for Call of duty 4?

Something like this... http://www.gameservers.com/

I have no idea how it would work :) just wondering if it can be done. I would rather send you the money rather than these guys..

I've thought about it, I get some pretty good deals on bandwidth since I'm piling servers in at the datacenter.

Is there money in it at all? As you know I don't need massive profit but the numbers have to be black before I'll do it. How many people are involved per server?

Cpanel actually markets gameserver software also so my foot is already way in the door.

So how about a streaming video Flash server too? :)

See:  http://www.red5server.org/

It would be great to embed longer videos and have them start playback as soon as clicked. I know they can be uploaded to Vimeo or YouTube to do that, but I would rather keep my files at Data 1 (and pay you :) ). At present the user has to wait for the Flash file to download completely before the video can start.

regards,

Martin.

At Gameserver they are charging 0.79ยข per slot (1 slot=1 player). They have a minimum of 10 slots on their lowest monthly charge. Some of the games, such as Battlefield, I have seen as many as 40 players on at one time and they also charge $1.24 per slot for a Battlefield server. I would assume it is more bandwidth intense? for them to be charging more.

On this page they list all of the available server, and as you can see, the prices really vary.

Would you make money? I don't know. I guess it would depend on what you are paying for bandwidth and what type of server you need to run some of the games. I know that Counter Strike comes in at $3.99/slot, so it must be a massive bandwidth eater, either that or the license is a bit pricey.

I tried gameservers...that was a nightmare:squint:. Their support is terrible :x I sat for nearly 4 hours with no response to a simple question. Needless to say, I will be getting a full refund tomorrow.

If you make this an option Jim, I will be the first to try it.

Once again, your support has spoiled me :)

Experimenting with flash server, what a can of worms!

I have a client that has requested one officially but none of the tutorials are 100% straight forward, I'm having to write a lot of the install stuff myself.

BUT it is working and I'm learning tons, I have a feeling we will have a public flash server in the near future.

Hi Jim,

That's great. :)

You may also be able to offer webcam support for the ProChatRooms add-on -- currently Flash hosting is very expensive from ProChatRooms: http://www.prochatrooms.com/hosting.php

regards,

Martin.

If the site got popular it would eat more than 20 bucks a month in bandwidth so I see their point.

I have it installed BTW and are doing testing. It does support live webcam broadcasts.
