This is a screenshot of part of my desktop and you can see what the problem is. I can stop the black squares by making the icons much, much bigger but then they fill the whole screen, very distracting. Clues anyone? This is Windows 7 by the way, with Classic desktop. The problem started about a week ago but I can't remember what I was doing at the time. Last edited on Tue Apr 6th, 2010 02:01 pm by Robert |

Hi Bob, The black squares should be the small arrows which Windows adds to an icon when it is a shortcut icon only. I've no idea why they have changed into large black squares, but you could try right-clicking on a blank space on the desktop, then Arrange Icons > Run Desktop Cleanup. Another option to try is to right-click on them and click Create Shortcut. You will then have duplicate icon. If it displays normally, you can delete the first one. But don't delete icons which aren't shortcuts. regards, Martin.

Delete the IconCache.db file under your profile then restart the computer. You might have to tell windows to show hidden files to see the IconCache.db file.

Hello Martin and Dave, First off Martin there is no cleanup command on the right click of the Desktop in Windows 7, just a refresh, which doesn't do much. I have tried your second idea too and all I get is another shortcut with the same black square. Dave I can't find the IconCache.db file anywhere and searching the system with hidden files showing comes up with no such file and sends me off to Microsoft to search there, again with no luck. Perhaps Windows 7 uses something different. I also don't appear to have a 'Profile' just a user account which really doesn't give you access to anything.

I think you should throw your current computer away. Just toss it right out the window and just purchase a new computer and start again. Why fix the problem when you can just buy a new one, hahahahaha Only kidding. Good luck fixing your issue.

The IconCache.db file is under John-Appdata-Local on my computer with Win 7 -64. John is my user name on my Winn 7 installation. Or you can log on as guest and eliminate using the current IconCache.db file

Robert Click on Start -> Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> folder options -> View -> Select Show hidden files folders and drives Close all open windows. Click Start -> Computer -> Users -> Your User Name -> AppData -> Local IconCache should be the 3rd file from the bottom, Delete it and then restart the computer.

Hi Dave, I found that file in two areas and deleted both but with no change in the icons appearance after a restart, Sorry. Don't worry Martin the computer isn't going out of any window. I like Windows 7 and this is just a monor glitch. I hope.

I am finding no other suggestions that I would try, I am finding a lot of registry hacks which I would avoid, did you upgrade from Vista or was it a clean install of Win 7.

It was a clean install on a brand new hard drive Dave. I have just remembered that I did use one of the programs I have to remove the arrow from all shortcuts, perhaps that may have had something to do with it. Mind you it was OK at the time when I first did that.

Was it TweakUi or something similar, as that was an unsupported registry hack, which a recent update from Microsoft closed access too.

Hello again Dave, It may have been that one I can't remember. Anyway it doesn't matter now as I have been scouring the different computer help forums and one of them came up with 'The Ultimate Windows Tweaker' so I downloaded that and ticked the box for removing the shortcut arrows, the same as I had done with the program I can't remember but which was probably TweakUI as that was the popular one. Anyway I then restarted the computer and now all is normal. The end result is good but I hate not knowing what really caused the problem in the first place. Thanks for your help which put me on the right track. All the best. Bob

Robert wrote: ticked the box for removing the shortcut arrows Hi Bob, Sorry to be a bit dense, why would you want to do that? The shortcut arrows appear to be utterly harmless. Now you don't know which icons are shortcuts, and which are actual files. regards, Martin.

Hello Martin, I don't have a good reason for doing that it's just that I don't like to see them. A purely cosmetic thing without reason. I know you are going to hate that reply but there it is. Whimsical eh? All the best. Bob
