Well its almost midnight and I just now got my system back up and running with a new hard drive and a fresh install of XP pro.

I have been quoted many times as saying that Avast is very good protection. I have to take that back now, there are modern threats that slide right by it. Many I got earlier today.

It didn't detect the routine on the way in, and allowed it to set up on my computer. Once it started executing Avast went off like a fireworks show filling my screen with the pretty yellow warning naming at least 30 viruses I saw. I couldn't click delete fast enough and ended up pulling the plug.

So if they want to win me back they would have to really shape up because I was updated in every way I know how. I am no stranger to this kind of thing and it still killed my computer.

I am now trying Kaspersky 2010 which I have been "following" for about 2 years now and it has gained almost spotless respect among internet users both experienced and novice.

I hope it is the right thing to do.

Jim

Very Interesting, Its not Surprising, because I have heard similar comments from other sources. Evidently Avast has fallen behind the curve and I have been looking at Kaspersky, but it sort of reminds me of Norton and others which charge an annual subscription fee. It seems once they have their income base established, they slack off and fall behind. I'm looking around for something that stays up with the current threats.

Norton slacked off and fell behind about 5 years ago in my opinion.

I don't know if any of them are good any more. If I get hit with Kas then I'm trying Martins NOD32. If I get hit with that I'm going pure KDE on top of Ubuntu. I could do it now but I still have to prove out sites and routines on what most people are using.... Windows/IE/Firefox.

I installed ubuntu on a 320 gig pata drive for a test and it did something to my Win 7 boot, now it has to load Grub and go thru a menu before it loads win 7 or XP pro or ubuntu.

This has me p.o. ed because I have to buy Win 7 before the RC runs out in March and I don't want this on my $320 version of Win 7 Ultimate and I don't want to Make a clean install. I found a fix so I could upgrade the RC and keep my current programs , File and settings by using this:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/3075/how-to-upgrade-the-windows-7-rc-to-rtm/

Now it appears that I will have to make a clean install and lose all my Files and settings.

Ubuntu is Ok but its not as neat as windows 7 ultimate, which is my opinion the best operating system going, I hate to give Microsoft any Credit, because this is what Vista Should have been in the start.

The internet is full of Norton horror stories, it's a wonder they are still in business.

Im not trying to start an uproar or burn my bridge, but how do people get so many viruses or what sites do they go to to get them. I realize there is not one particular site that has every virus....I have had one virus that took out my pc, and that was about 10 years ago. :? Here lately, I have read so much about peoples pc's being taken out by viruses, it has me worried and curious.

Again, not tryin to ruin my luck streak, or poke fun at anyone... just curious....

Hi Dean,

This worries me too. My AV fires off so rarely that I sometimes wonder if it is actually working, or set up correctly. I think it has detected dodgy email attachments in spam emails about 5 times in the last year. I wouldn't have opened them anyway. Normally these are caught by the email spam/virus filters at my ISP.

Until we hit this Gumblar thing, my AV had NEVER fired once on a web page in 12 years use of the internet. It has now fired just twice, both times on these boards when testing for the current virus problem.

When I scan my system it always says it is clean, but it would actually be reassuring if it occasionally found something and cleaned it. :)

Why do I think I shall regret writing this?

regards,

Martin.

I had put all my faith in Avast and Malware Anti Malware and Now to hear Jim Got zapped using Avast disturbs me worries me. I suppose I need to move on to something else, but Money is my main concern. I'm on a Social Security Pension and my spendable income is very limited my next planned purchase is Windows 7 Ultimate and that will eat up my spendable for February. Its too Early for me to go on a 30 day trial right now. Looking at the reviews Bitdefender looks like #1 and Kaspersky #2 in the reviews I have been looking at http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/. Looks like all three do about the same thing, just a matter of preference.

John

I just removed Avast From my Win 7 RC and loaded Bitdefender 2010 30 day trial. I will be checking this out and give my opinions on it.

SO FAR this is working for me and my computer HAD THE BAD ROOT KIT, that I had to pay $129 to have removed by a Dell professional

I use the following and it seems to be working
1) AVG, updated daily, run twice a day
2) Malwarebytes, updated daily, run every other day
3) a-squared, updated daily, run every other day
4) Trojan Remover 6.8.1 - download evaluation version at http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/download.html
5) Prevx - free version - http://www.prevx.com/

The last 2 are both ones that the Dell rep used when cleaning my machine. I currently update and run them daily.

6) Lastly I also use CCleaner to completely remove all temp files regularly.

I know this seems like a lot BUT I WAS INFECTED and with the amount of websites I own or work on I was logging into the files every day and all day and running the risk of infecting other sites as well.

So in my mind, no amount of efforts is to much, especially when you consider that I personally spoke to Dell's main security guys, Time Warner's virus team, and the Geek Squad guys at Best Buy - ALL SAID the virus people are faster and better then any of the programs mentioned above and are coming out with new stuff faster then the programs above can update themselves. Since the programs above are also COMPETING to be the best and updating at different speeds, it is important to run them all, or some combination of each. One might catch something the other does not.

So far I have been clean since the big wipe of my system, but I say that with CROSSED FINGERS and a prayer.

PS - here is the page on Time Warner Cable's site that they are using with the millions of customers they have infected across the country. This page has links to download many of the programs listed above.  http://twccarolinas-security.com/

Hi TVD,

That doesn't seem very frequent. My ESET NOD32 checks for updates once every hour, and often updates itself several times in one day.

On the other hand, it so rarely fires that I'm not sure it's actually doing anything.

regards,

Martin.

p.s. I've checked the logs.

In the last few days NOD32 has updated itself this many times each day:

4, 3, 4, 2, 2, and 2 times so far today.

How does that compare with other AV programs?

Martin.

i have to admit that my computer got attacked from all ends last week...
Rootkits and all
Paul being the computer programmer/techie and geek and has been for almost 23 years now ..

i was using Avast the free one and of course it didnt catch me getting attacked..

So Paul was going to wipe out my computer and re-install

i got to reading on Avast about their 'Professional' which you have to purchase...

so we did..

After installing it and running it ... BOY did i need a cleaning

it got the rootkit and all ... personally and i think Paul agrees it was worth the money for 2 years of coverage to upgrade to Professional

I have the paid professional version of AVG and it updates multiple times a day also. I just put "updated daily" so people would know what I am doing with each program, etc. And I agree with you about the virus programs finding nothing that I think they are doing nothing. the OTHER programs on my list are the ones that do the heavy lifting and usually find anything if something is there.
