What is the best way to save a video file for emailing and uploading? My camera saves them as AVI files. Most

An average 2 minute clip is about 56MB.... is there a file format that will keep the quality good, but make the file size much smaller, and if so, what program?

Thanks  in advance... :)

WinRAR cuts down the size quite a bit.

AVI is too big Dean. It's generally accepted that WMV is the best compromise betweeen quialty and space. If you have XP you can use the built in free Windows Movie Maker (you may have to drag the shortcut from Program Files) to downsize the video, there are tons of choices and preview each one afterwards to see which setting gives the best result for you or Photobucket etc.
HJSplit is free and easy to use for chopping up the video into smaller segments, just let the recipients know they will ned HJSplit to reassemble the clips after downloading.

well, i bought a new HD camcorder. It saves the videos as MOV files, which Movie Maker will not open. Now it looks like I am in the same boat as before. Does anyone know of a program, cheep or free, that will allow me to edit MOV files?

Hi Dean,

MOV is a Mac video format for the Apple QuickTime player:

 http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

The basic player for Windows is free. If you buy the Pro version for $30, you can edit MOV files in QuickTime and also save them in other formats such as AVI which can be edited in Windows Movie Maker.

If you prefer free, you can convert MOV to AVI format using a program called RAD Video Tools, free download from:

 http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm

(It may be necessary to have the QuickTime player installed).

p.s. None of this tested by me -- RAD Video Tools complies with my basic requirement for all free software that the developer's postal address is available:
US Office:
RAD Game Tools, Inc.
550 Kirkland Way - Suite 406
Kirkland, WA 98033
425.893.4300 phone
425.609.2463 fax

Japanese Office:
RAD Game Tools
050-3685-7107 phone
090-9137-0628 cell

regards,

Martin.

Sony Vegas Pro 9 is the most popular. Not free at about $70 but you can download it for 30 days trial first.
